Aiden

I paced through the living room of the cabin, itching for the sun to go down so I could shift and run and clear my head from the tangled thoughts that had been plaguing me for the last four days.

Like why Micah had shown up at my house, fucked me senseless, then walked out without an explanation for any of it. Or spoken to me since.

“Dude, you have to chill,” Liam said mildly from where he was sprawled on the couch.

I shot him a death glare. He didn’t have a clue.

“Drop it,” I practically growled.

“Seems to me you’re the one who can’t let it go,” he replied, giving me a pointed stare.

I huffed out a breath and raked my fingers through my hair, then continued pacing.

How was I supposed to let it go? I didn’t have the first clue what was going on. I hadn’t told any of them I’d gone into heat. How could I even explain that? My heat suppressors had always worked. I was constantly surrounded by alphas and it was never an issue.

Maybe things were different when it came to fated mates, though. I wasn’t sure. It wasn’t a typical topic of conversation among the guys. Maybe there was someone I could ask, however.

I strode from the room and headed upstairs. Carter was just coming out of the kids’ room where he’d put them down for a nap.

“Can I talk to you for a minute?” I asked, my voice hushed.

He must have heard the urgency in it, though, because he nodded quickly, his eyes full of concern. “Of course.”

I glanced back toward the stairs, knowing the guys would be able to hear our entire conversation with their heightened shifter hearing. “Can we go on a walk or something?”

Carter’s brow furrowed, but he didn’t press the issue. “Yeah, let me just tell Garrett.”

He disappeared into their room for a minute, then came back out wearing his jacket and hiking boots. Good thinking. I went and grabbed my own from my room, then we headed out.

When we were a safe distance from the cabin, I just put it all out there. “Micah and I had sex. After I went into heat.”

Carter stopped in his tracks, blinking at me. “Aren’t you on heat suppressors?”

I nodded vigorously. “Yes,” I hissed. “So it doesn’t make any sense.”

He paused, then winced a little. “Okay, I know this is pretty personal, but I have to ask. Did he knot you?”

I blew out a breath and looked away. It was all the answer he needed.

“That’s why, Aiden,” he said gently. “He’s your mate. That changes everything.”

Yeah, no kidding.

“But I don’t think he wants to be.”

“Why would you say that?” he asked carefully.

“It’s been four days and I haven’t seen or heard from him since. And he left right after, before we even had a chance to talk about it.” There seemed to be a pattern there.

We resumed our walk, following an easy trail that wound through the woods to the east of the cabin. Silence stretched between us for a few minutes, and I got lost in my thoughts again.
